Leebinsoyeon moves restlessly between sincerity and jest. She plays around with familiar names and relationships, attaching one to another and imagining scenarios that are awkward, trivial, exaggerated, and a little wicked. She then takes clichés that seem to offer “nothing more to see” and uses them as the filling for her narratives.
Using mockumentary as a method, Leebinsoyeon mixes real and fictional characters, interviews and staged scenes, personal memories and images from popular culture. Following a premise she has set for herself, she asks questions (sometimes without letting on), sketches, and films. As she plays out a situation that began as fiction in real life, she pays attention to the moments when feelings and relationships emerge and shift. Events, emotions, and odd answers that pop up in the course of her research conspire with intentions formed on the spot. As the original story collides with reality, it veers off course, swells, and takes on another shape.
Leebinsoyeon cannot tell which side is more real, nor is she interested in doing so. Sincerity and jest, things made up and things that actually happened, the intentional and the accidental keep encroaching on one another’s territory. In the process, familiar ways of understanding and ordering things begin to slip out of alignment. As scattered images become entangled with chance events, the order of the world we had taken for granted briefly appears strange. A mirage, briefly conjured over reality by intentional fiction and the truths discovered within it. It may quickly disappear, but having passed through that mirage, we might, every now and then, sense the world differently.
